Choose the right color for the walls. Tone the cabinets down by adding large accessories like; bowls, trays, chalkboard, window treatments.   You can paint some of your cabinets,  not all!  Paint, re-design, or add an island! If you want to add rustic, vintage, or shabby-chick feel, try chalk paint. This type of paint doesn't require special preparation or sanding.

Layer your types of light! It's the foundation of every well-lit space and helps to create dimension and set the mood.

Create a focal point with a stunning chandelier! It doesn't need to be expansive; rather, it should be unique. Light fixtures you see on the pictures were purchased for $50 each and then painted and decorated with additional details. It is important for the open plan to be consistent across the room. This doesn't mean all finishes or styles have to match. It just means the overall feel of rooms should flow together, and the same style light fixtures will help you with that.
